Point guard Bo Spencer is transferring to Nebraska after having been declared academically ineligible at LSU. Spencer would have been LSU's top returning scorer this season, with 14.5 points a game, but coach Trent Johnson announced in May that Spencer would be ineligible. Spencer averaged 11.4 points in 2008-09 as LSU won the Southeastern Conference championship and made the NCAA tournament.

Trevor Mbakwe's yearlong exile from basketball is finally over, which is why he couldn't stop smiling on Monday. Ex-NBA player and Michigan State star Jay Vincent has been indicted for an Internet employment scam that bilked about 20,000 jobseekers out of about $2 million, the U.S. Attorney's office said Thursday. The 51-year-old Vincent and 53-year-old Anthony Portee face charges of mail fraud, and Vincent is charged with an income tax violation, authorities said.

Virginia Commonwealth University men's basketball head coach Shaka Smart has signed a two-year contract extension. The school announced the deal Wednesday. The extension comes less than 17 months on the job. In his first season, Smart led the Rams to a 27-9 record, one win shy of the school record.

University of Mississippi basketball coach Andy Kennedy on Tuesday settled a defamation lawsuit with a cab driver and a valet stemming from a dispute over a ride. John Wall may have departed for the riches of the NBA, but a pair of young guards appear ready to try and fill the void for the Kentucky Wildcats. Seton Hall University has settled a wrongful termination lawsuit brought by former men's basketball coach Bobby Gonzalez. School spokeswoman Holly Wojcik (WOH'-chek) confirms a settlement has been reached but says the terms are confidential. Gonzalez is known for his brash, aggressive style and was fired March 17 after Seton Hall lost in the opening round of the NIT.

Mel Turpin, former NBA player an All-American Kentucky center, committed suicide Thursday, authorities said. He was 49. Police and the coroner were called to his North Lexington house Thursday afternoon on a personal injury call. They found Turpin dead. Coroner Gary Ginn says that Turpin had committed suicide, but would not say how.
