University of Alabama head football coach Nick Saban has signed an extension to his original contract that will keep him in charge of the Crimson Tide football program through the 2017 season, Director of Athletics Mal Moore announced Saturday.The contract extension is subject to approval by the Compensation Committee of the Board of Trustees of the University of Alabama System. That committee is expected to meet soon to discuss the extension.
"Coach Saban has impressively led the Alabama football program back to national prominence in a short period of time," said UA Director of Athletics Mal Moore. "That success has been evident in all facets - on-field results, his embrace of Alabama's athletics and academic culture, recruiting, and community service. In every way, Coach Saban has positioned our program among college football's elite."
"This contract extension is a clear statement of our mutual commitment to building on the foundation he has established."Saban, who is about to begin his third season at the helm of the Alabama program, signed an original eight-year contract when he joined the Crimson Tide in 2007 that was to carry him through the 2014 season. This contract extension will be effective immediately after Board of Trustees approval and will add an additional three years to the original commitment.
